First, there was only the face-to-face job interview, then employers started using phone interviews. Now, video job interviews are starting to become popular.
In this video, we’re going to give you some inside tips to help you get through your video interview. That’s coming up.
Hi guys, I’m Kim with Snagajob, your number one source for hourly jobs and welcome to our weekly show where we give you job search advice from resume tips to interview advice, and everything in between.
At first glance, video interviewing can seem a little intimidating. You basically know how to talk to people face-to-face and over the phone. But it’s kind of weird to talk at the computer. I mean you’ve just perfected interviewing in person and now you have to learn an entire new way of interviewing!?! Not necessarily.
Prepare yourself as you would a normal interview. This means make sure you research the company and practice common job interview questions.
But, what steps should you take specifically for a video interview?
1) The background counts! I’ve heard from employers that they can tell a lot about how organized an applicant is over Skype. Make sure you pick a room that is not cluttered and does not have a mess behind you! Also, be sure you dress as you would for an in-person interview. Remember, they will be able to see you, your reactions and your demeanor. You want to look as professional and organized as possible!
2) Practice what will happen – Have a friend or family member run through all of your equipment to make sure everything is working. You don’t want to find out right before the interview that your internet is down. While you’re at it, start practicing how you would answer interview questions. This way they can give you feedback on what you look like on camera.
3) Post-its are your friends – Have you ever left an interview mad at yourself because you forgot to say something important? Me too. Write down any important points you want to make about your experiences or what would make you perfect for the job on post-its. Then, put them around your computer screen. This way you won’t have to awkwardly look down and it won’t look so obvious that you are checking your notes.
So, while the idea of having a job interview through video may seem a little intimidating, if you take the right steps to stand out for all the right reasons it won’t be so bad.
